Moving Supplies
If you have hired the services of a
professional moving company, one of the ways you could reduce your moving time and make it more cost-efficient is to pack your goods in the most professional manner possible. This is particularly relevant if you have hired the services of moving labor also, to move and load your goods on to the truck. Remember, these types of labor charge you by the hour and if they find that the goods are packed in a slip shod manner, they would have to re-pack them all over again, resulting in an increase of their hourly hiring charges. Here are some do’s and don’ts regarding professional packing and tips on how to make use of the best moving supplies during your relocation:
There is a popular tendency to use old unused garbage bags for packing household items during moving. It is strongly advised not to use them as they offer no protection to your goods, however cheap and daily-use they may be. Additionally, packing goods in and with garbage bags is difficult and time consuming when loading on to the moving truck. Goods often break during transit with this type of packing.
The best option is to use moving boxes and cartons as part of your moving supplies. Here you will be tempted to used old and used cartons given free or at a discount by friends, neighbors, departmental stores or even suppliers specializing in discount products. Their strength and weight-bearing capacity must be thoroughly checked before using them for packing. In case you decide to buy these cartons from your local grocery store, make sure that the size is what you require and the top and bottom of the boxes have not been cut off. Usually these boxes are not strong and not recommended for packing during a move. To avoid getting boxes of different sizes, it is far better that you get boxes of same size, as packing and loading boxes of varied sizes is very time consuming. Many moving companies also organize new moving boxes through their business affiliates and are available at good discounted price.
If your move is only for a short distance, you could use used clothing materials like towels, blankets and quilts as padding for your furniture. These not only provide protection to fragile items but also prevent scratches and dents to your furniture and other household goods.
It is advisable not to stuff or squeeze these cloth materials too much between your furniture as it might bet damaged. This is a particular concern area for long distance moves when items tend to rub against each other and results in scratches and other damages.
It is best not to economize on wrapping or packing paper and use news paper in stead. The ink from newspaper sometimes results in tough stains, which are difficult to remove even from furniture and clothes. The price of good quality packing paper is same as news paper but it offers far better protection and area of coverage. Wrapping paper is very easily available at local store or you could even contact your local moving company to organize them for you at a discount. This type of paper is perhaps the most cost-effective option to be used as stuffing inside your boxes.
Good quality packing tapes must be purchased to close all boxes securely. When the boxes are taped tightly, it makes moving and loading much easier and you could save a lot of time in the hourly charges of moving labor. The tightly taped boxes are less prone to damage and your goods remain secure during journey.
